ABSTRACT Information and Communication Technology (ICT) has progressed at a rapid pace and there is no reason to believe that this will not continue. The future undoubtedly will introduce some yet unimaginable technological advancements affecting the way information is used and delivered. Librarians will need to be willing to keep pace and to take initiative when it comes to planning, acquiring, organizing, disseminating and preservation information resources and managing the use ofnew technologies in their libraries. The challenge will be to maintain the traditional values ofthe profession and preserve a system that has contributed to the social, political, intellectual and technological advancements of the past century. For this we need librarians with communication, critical thinking and technological skills who are committed to preserving the historical underpinnings ofthe profession
