ABSTRACT

A study using aqueous extracts of Chromolaenaodorata was carried out to investigate the possible allelopathic effect ofits stem and leaf extracts on germination and seedling growth ofArachis hypogea (L.) (Groundnut) and 1 Abelmischus esculenta (L.) (Okra) at treatment concentration 1:1, 1.2:5 and 1:5 respectively. Distilled water was used as control while undiluted was used as the main concentrated extract. Results show that treatment at (p<0.005) did not significantly inhibit the germination ofseeds ofthe plant. There was significant reduction (p<0.005) in the plant height, dry weight of okra, but did not have significant effect in the dry weight of Groundnut. Concentration of extracts affected the rate ofthe inhibition of germination and seedling growth ofthe two plants species. The higher the concentration of extracts, the more the inhibitory effects ofthe extracts
