ABSTRACT 8.56g of xiii Crateva adansonii has been used fbr many years traditionally in treating headaches and inflammation. The phytochemistry , anti oxidant and membrane stability effects were investigated in this study. The percentage yield ofthe leaves was 13.87w/w. 35g ofthe crude methanolic extract was subjected to solvent-solvent partitioning to yield 7.5g, 2.0g 3.1g and n- hexane, chloroform, ethyl acetate and methanol fractions respectively. Phytochemical analysis showed the presence ofsaponnins in the crude, ethyl acetate and nhexane fractions; flavonoids were present in the crude and methanol fraction. All fractions showed dose- dependent increases in anti- oxidant activity using 2,2- diphenyl picryl hydraazyl assay. However, ethyl acetate fraction had mean percentage anti- oxidant value of 97.58±0.03 and 98.55±0.12 at 200 and 400 gg/ml respectively, which was higher than that of ascorbic acid 95.62±0.22 and 96.67 0.07 at 200 and 400|ig/ml respectively. Membrane stability activity studies showed that the crude methanol extract ofCrateva adansonii showed protective activity on red blood cell membrane, 93.75% at 0.2mg/ml which was better than indomethacin 81.98% at a concentration of 0.4mg/ml. Mean absorbance at 0.2mg/ml wwas 0.08±0.04 at P?0.001 compared to the distilled wwater. The methanol fraction exhibited the highest protection ofred blood cells with 98.7% reduction in haemolysis when compared to 0% in distilled water, also mean absorbance of red blood cell in methanol fraction was 0.02±0.01 at P70.001 when compared to distilled water(1.25±0,08)
