ABSTRACT ix Immunomodulatory effect of methanol leaves extract ofAnthocleista vogelli on immune system was evaluated. The experimental animals made up of twelve animals, were grouped into three made up of four animals each. Group one which is the normal control received only water and standard feed, group two received a standard drug, while group three received (400mg/kg BW) of the plant extract. This experiment lasted for 21 days after which the animals were sacrificed and the blood collected via cardiac puncture and stored in EDTA sample bottles for further tests ofhaematology. Results showed that there was a non-significant increase (p>0.05) in packed cell volume (PCV) when the extract group (46.25 ± 3.20) was compared with that of normal control (44.17 ± 1.72) and standard group (44.50 ± 1.00). Red blood cells (RBC) showed a significant (p<0.05) decrease when the extract group (20.00 ± 1.63) was compared with normal control (22.67 ± 8.24) and increase compared to standard drug group (11.75 ± 1.50). Total white blood cell count (TWBC) showed a significant (p<0.05) increase when the extract group (25.00 ± 0.81) was compared with normal control (19.83 ± 1.60) and standard drug group (15.25 ± 0.95). Platelets showed a significant (p<0.05) decrease when the extract group (51.75 ± 2.87) was compared with normal control group (52.17 ± 1.94) and a significant drug group (24.75 ± 1.50). Haemoglobin (HB) showed a non-significant (p>0.05) decrease when the extract (12.35 ± 0.75) was compared with normal control (13.87 ± 3.14) and standard drug group (13.90 ± 0.36). This study therefore, indicated that the extract has an immunostimulatory potential effect and therefore recommend that further work should be carried out in A. vogelli to identify its effects on other inflammatory properties as well as their properties and mechanism(s) of action.
