ICTs and Nigerian University Libraries:- Amaoge D. Agbo

ABSTRACT

The advances in information and communication technologies (ICTs) have moved the world into an information age and invariably repositioned libraries to face the challenges brought about by the information superhighways. This is because availability, application and use of ICTs have led to breakthroughs and developments which are rapidly reshaping the ways libraries and librarians store, manipulate, retrieve and disseminate information. It is however expedient to note that within the information age, the value of timely, accurate and relevant information has increasingly been acknowledged as providing a leading edge in the modem competitive world and virtually every university library is on the move to catch up with this revolution of new technology, which is the application of ICT in the discharge of their core functions of information acquisition, organization, dissemination, preservation and conservation. This was captured in the words of Krubu and Osawaru (2011), as they stated that the contemporary information duties or tasks in university libraries are no longer measured by range of information explosion alone but by revolution, empowered by adequately provided ICT as its application (ICT) enhances library activities and services and has provided a platform by which the information needs of lecturers and students are adequately satisfied.
