ABSTRACT ix This study examined the haematology, oxidative stress and electrolyte alteration in dogs infected with canine parvovirus in South Eastern, Nigeria. The study was earned out with forty six (46) dogs grouped into three groups. Group 1 was twenty one (21) dogs that were diarrhoiec dogs naturally infected with CPV-2, Group 11 was fifteen (15) diarrhoiec dogs uninfected with CPV-2 and Group 111 was ten (10) healthy dogs which served as control. The diarrhoiec dogs used were randomly selected from dogs presented to various veterinary clinics and hospitals in South Eastern Nigeria. From the result, it was observed that the mean red blood cell parameters, (RBC counts, PCV and HB concentrations were significantly lower at (P<0.05) in the diarrhoeic CPV2 infected group. The mean electrolyte did not show any significant difference in the K* and HCO3- in both the diarrhoeic infected and non-infected groups. The mean Na* was significantly lower at (P<0.05) in the diarrhoeic non-infected group than the diarrhoeic infected group and there was no significant difference in Cl" when compared within the groups. The mean SOD and CAT were significantly low in the diarrhoeic infected and the diarrhoeic non-infected groups respectively. The mean lipid peroxidation (MDA) was signicantly higher in the diarrhoeic noninfected group than the diarrhoeic infected group and there was no significant difference with the glutathione when compared within the groups. It was therefore concluded from this study that the red blood cell parameters (red blood cell counts, pack cell volume and haemoglobin concentrations) are likely to decrease in a CPV-2 infected dogs, more so the level of oxidative stress and electrolyte alterations may not be affected by the origin or aetiology ofthe diarrhoea but on the severity ofthe infection.
