ABSTRACT
The effect of combined herbs (Piper guinensis and Xylopia aethuopica) were used in postnatal prophylaxis and these effects on Glutathione, Vitamin C and Vitamin E serum content of lactating mothers were evaluated. Similarly volunteer controls (lactating women without the spice treatment) were also evaluated. Blood sera samples were collected from both groups and analyzed for the three test parameters (Glutathione, Vitamin C and Vitamin B). Results show that Glutathione and Vitamin E increased in the test sample relative to the control, while Vitamin C decreased. It was concluded that the relative increase in the antioxidant levels was observed as a health benefit. It was therefore concluded that the dietary intake of the test spices during lactation should not be discouraged. But the need for further studies on the spices was recommended.
