ABSTRACT Young adulthood (20-30 years) is a critical stage for forming lifelong dietary and lifestyle practices, yet evidence shows that poor fruit and vegetable intake and low physical activity contribute to increasing risks ofobesity and chronic diseases. This study assessed fruit and vegetable consumption patterns and physical activity levels among 250 randomly selected young adults in Ikwuano LGA, Abia State, using a cross-sectional descriptive design. Data were collected through validated questionnaires, 24-hour dietary recall, food frequency questionnaires, and anthropometric measurements, while physical activity was evaluated according to WHO guidelines. Results showed that 54.8% of respondents were females, 80.4% fell within the 20-24 age group, and 57.2% had tertiary education. Dietary analysis revealed that only 41.6% achieved high dietary diversity scores, while less than half consumed fruits and vegetables four or more days weekly. Physical activity assessment indicated that 48.0% met the WHO minimum recommendation, whereas 52.0% were insufficiently active. Anthropometric findings revealed that 62.4% had normal BMI, 21.2% were overweight, 6.8% obese, and 9.6% underweight, with a mean Waist-Hip Ratio (WHR) of 0.87 ± 0.06 for males and 0.82 ± 0.05 for females, indicating borderline central adiposity among some participants. Statistical analysis showed a significant relationship (p < 0.05) between adequate fruit/vegetable intake, physical activity, and anthropometric status. The study concludes that despite moderate awareness, suboptimal dietary patterns and insufficient physical activity remain prevalent, predisposing young adults to nutrition-related health risks, thereby underscoring the need for targeted nutrition education, policy action, and community-based interventions to promote healthier eating and more active lifestyles.
