ABSTRACT

This study sought to evaluate the antibiotics susceptibility pattern of Salmonella species recovered from poultry farms and their plasmid profile. The isolates were identified using conventional method and screened against antibiotics in the agar diffusion technique. The drug resistant isolates were profiled for plasmid in the alkaline lysis technique. It was observed that 75.0% of the Salmonella isolates were susceptible to Ofloxacin with a greater percentage (87.5%) of them being resistant to Augmentin. Other antibiotic with higher potency against the isolates were Ceftriaxone and Augmentin. Two out of the five most drug resistant isolates were found to harbour plasmid DNA. The study established the presence of Salmonella specie in poultry and their high resistance to antibioticsĀ
