Abstract

Nephrotoxicity is the poisonous effects of some substances which may be toxic chemicals and medication in the kidney. These poisonous substances are called nephrotoxins when they produce these toxic effects on the kidney. This study evaluated the nephrotoxic effects of Camosunate in wister albino rats. The study was conducted using 20 wister albino rats which were randomized into five (5) groups 1-5 with group 5 serving as the normal control. Group 1 was giving 20mg/kg of the drug, group 2 15mg/kg, group 3 1 Omg/kg and group 4 5mg/kg. The animals were divided into two groups namely; A and B. Group A was treated for 3 days and group B was treated for 7 days. Nephrotoxicity was determined by the key kidney function parameters: urea and creatinine. These were evaluated using the method of Chaney and Marbach ( 1962) and Tausky (1961) respectively. Results obtain showed a significant (P<0.05) increase in both serum urea and creatinine when the treated groups were compared with the normal control with the degree of significance decreasing as the concentration (20mg/kg> 15mg/kg> 1 0mg/kg> 5mg/kg) but increasing as the duration of treatment. Hence the dosage and duration dependent increase observed in the kidney function parameters may be attributed to damage of the nephrotic system which may be as a result of damaging effect of the drug.
