Evaluation Of Resource Use Productivity In Cocoyam Production In Abia State

ABSTRACT
This study investigated evaluation of resource use productivity in cocoyam production in Abia state. A total of 100 farmers were randomly selected and interviewed for the study Specifically, the study focused on; To examining the socio economic characteristics of cocoyam farmers such as, sex, age, level of education, house hold size, income, farm size etc; estimating the determinants of productivity; evaluating constraints to expansion of production of cocoyam; Estimating the level of resource use productivity of the farmers; The study employed structured questionnaire in collection of data. Data were analyzed by the use of percentages, frequency distribution and multiple regression analysis. The results revealed that women participated more in cocoyam production than their men counterparts. Age and education were significant and negatively related to productivity of cocoyam while income was significant and positively related to productivity of cocoyam. It was recommended that extension agents should design teaching programmes for cocoyam farmers and conduct enterprise related training in the farmers own location. This will go long way to reduce the rate of illiteracy in the study area.
