Effects Of Oven Drying Of Rubber Seeds On Its Cyanogenic Glycosides Content And On The Toxicity In Rats

ABSTRACT

The effects of oven drying rubber seeds at different temperature on its cyánogenic glycoside content and changes in some clinically important enzymes in rats were examined. The seeds were processed by oven drying at different temperatures of 900c 1200c 1500c and l8O over the periods of 30mins — 180rnins which lead to 8.5 —28. 13%, 21.78— 40.04%, 23.71 — 3857%, 31.98-38.68%, 28.12-43 .63% decrease of total cyanide content of the seed. The seeds were chipped and oven dried at 600c and 1200c over a period of 30mm — l8Omins. This result in 45.86— 50.02% and 39.93 — 44.94% reduction in the total cyanide content of the seed respectively. Ingestion of feed compounded from the oven dried seeds and containing 11 .14 mg Cr4 resulted in elevated blood thiocyanate after 48 hours. The total protein content of the blood of the animals was normal while there was a marked decrease in blood glucose level. The activities of alkaline phosphate, aspartate amino transferees and alanine amino transferees enzymes did not show any significant change when compared to control. The results are discussed from the biochemical, nutritional and toxicological point of view.
