Effects Of Ethanolic Root Extract Of Sphenocentrum jollyanum On Some Serum Electrolyte (Na+ ,K+, CI-,HCO3.) In Induced Diabetic Wistar Albino Rat :- Eberechukwu, Jenefa .C.

ABSTRACT

Roots of Sphenocentrum joUyamtm are used as Anti-diabetic, anti-hyperglycemic and treatment constipation. The present study was aimed at evaluating the effects of ethanolic root extract of S.jollyanum on some electrolytes (Na’,K’,Cl-,11CO3) in diabetic Wistar Albino Rat. Twenty(20) rats were used to carry out this experiment and was grouped into five of four groups; Group 1 :Normal control(no diabetes and fed with feed and water),Group 2: Low dose(diabetic and treated with 200mg/kg),Group 3Positive control(diabetic and treated with glibenclamide), Group 4.’High dose(diabetic and treated with 400mg/kg), Group 5:Negative control(diabetic and not treated).Results: When 200mg/kg and 400mg/kg of the extract was compared with Group 5,there was a significant(p<0.05) decrease in DayO and a not significant(p>0.05) dose dependent decrease in wcek2 and 3.Also there was a significant (p<0.05) decrease in the serum electrolytes(Na4, K',C1-, HCO3') from the bar chart. Conclusion: The plant extract was toxic because it contains inhibitory compounds that decreases the absorption of these electrolytes(NaL KLC1‘, HCO3) and it also contains antioxidants, antihyperglycemic properties.
