Effects Of Chloroquine Phosphate On The Levels Of Some Biochemical Indices In Malaria Patients.

ABSTRACT
The effects of chioroquine phosphate on the levels of some biochemical indices were carried Out on the serum and whole blood samples of' 72 identified malaria pati ts (99% undergraduates and 1% junior staff all of M.O.U.A.U. with ages between 16 and 30 years) in a diagnostic laboratory. Out of the 72 patients screened for malaria parasite using thin blood smear; 51(70.83%) were infected, with 27 males making up 37.50% and 24 females making up 33.33%. Thirty patients (16 males and 14 females) out of the 51 infected patients complied with a 4-day chioroquine regimen and were designated test patients. While the 21 (29.17%) uninfected patients (12 males and 9 females) Out of the 72-screened patients were designated control. The results obtained show all the biochemical indices assayed for remaining within normal limits, except for serum urea; AST and ALT increasing significantly (P<0.05) above normal in untreated female patients of ages ranging between 26-30 years. The results also show significant differences (P><0.05) in the levels.
