ABSTRACT

The oyster mushioom, Pieurotus ostreatus was inoculated and cultured in three different media. The first medium contains vitamin B( (thiamine), the second medium contains vitamin B6 (pyridoxine) while the third medium contain no vitamins at all and serves as a control experiment. The experiment was carried out to determine whether the vitamins will improve or inhibit the growth of the mushroom mycelia. It was observed that vitamin B6 (pyridoxine) performed best I' followed by the control and finally vitamin Bi (thiamine). It therefore suggests that vitamin B6 (pyridoxine) accelerates mycelial growth while Vitamin Bl (thiamine) inhibits mycelia growth in P. ostreatus varjlorida The result was discussed in relation to the use of vitamins to mass produce the mycelia of P.ostreatus which s could improve the final yield of mushroom eventually.
