Effect Of The Ethanol Extract Of The Leaves Of Annona Muriccitci On The Lipid Peroxidation Of Aspirin-Ulcerated Rats:- Agu, Favour .A.

ABSTRACT

Many plains and plant-derived products have been screened for their medicinal purposes with some having anti-inflammatory and anti-ulcer effects among others. I he aim oi this work was to determine the effect ofthe ethanol extract of the leaves ol A. muricata on malondialdehyde (MDA) concentration of aspirinulcerated rats. 1 he preliminary phytochemical screening revealed that the extract contained alkaloids, flavonoids, tannins, saponins, carbohydrates, glycosides, proteins, steroids, terpenoids and fats and oil but reducing sugars, acidic compounds and resins were not delected in the extract. The extract al the graded doses [100, 200 and 400 mg/kg body weight (b.w)J caused significant (p < 0.05) and dose-dependent decreases in the MDA concentrations of the rats in the test group when compared to the value obtained for the rats in the control group. The effect of the 400 mg/kg b.w of the extract was similar to that of the standard anti-ulcer drug, ranitidine at the dose of 150 mg/kg b.w. The results indicate that the ethanol extract of the leaves of A. mwicata contains some pharmacologically active principles which justify the use of leaves of the plant in traditional medicine for the treatment ol gastric ulcer.
