Effect Of The Aqueous Extract Of Pleurotus Ostreatus Grown On Hc1- Treated Palm-Bunch On Some Kidney Function Parameters In Wistar Albino Rats

ABSTRACT

 The study was carried out to determine the effect of aqueous extract of Pleurotus ostreatus in some kidney function parameters in wistar albino rats. The rats were purchased at the department of zoology university of Nigeria, Nsukka Enugu State. Twenty four (24) wistar albino rats were used acclimization lasted for a week after which the rats were divided into 6 groups of 4 per group. Group I served as control which has no HC1 concentration used in the growth of the P. ostreatus. While the test groups (2, 3, 4, 5 and 6) was given the extract of (0.1, 0.2, 0.3, 0.4, and 0.5% HC1) used in the growth of P. ostreatus respectively. The experiment lasted for 3 weeks (21 days) after which the rats were sacrificed and blood samples collected was assayed for serum urea, sodium, chloride and bicarbonate concentration using standard procedure. Results showed that in the serum urea concentration, are significantly (pO.05) increased when compared to the control. The serum sodium ion concentration are non-significantly (pO.05) increased when compared with the control whereas, the level of the extract of 0.2% HCI and 0.5% HCI are non-significantly (p>O.05) decreased and the level of the extract of 0.4% HC1 is significantly decreased when compared with the control. This study therefore indicated that P. ostreatus possesses nephro-protective properties which can oppose the renal toxicity induced by high doses of HC1 in the kidneys.
