Effect Of Oral Administration Of Hot Water Extracts Of Three Edible Mushrooms On Hormonal Response In Wistar Rat

ABSTRACT

Edible mushrooms are the fungi fruiting bodies which have high protein content along with several vitamins and minerals. Studies have also reported that plant extracts possess medicinal values including anti fertility potentials. This study was carried out to evaluate the oral administration of hot water extracts of some edible mushrooms on hormonal response in female wistar rats. The extracts was administered orally at doses of 300mg/kg, 400mg/kg, 500mg/kg body weight daily to healthy female rats divided into 4 groups for 21 days. Phytochernical screening of the extracts revealed the presence of alkaloids, saponins, tannins and flavanoids. Administration of the extracts produced significant (pO.OS) reduced . The alterations in the female rat reproductive hormones by the extracts are indications of positive effect on the maturation and ovulation of follicles. Consequently, the extracts may be used in fertility and conception in female rats.
