ABSTRACT This study was carried out to investigate effects of loranthus micranthus linn in biochemical parameters (total protein, creatinine, urea nitrogen) in male wistar rat induced cadmium toxicity. The LD50 ofthe plant which showed no toxic effect or death ofthe animal even at dose as high as 5000mg/kg body weight indicating that the extract is safe. Sixteen (16) animals was used, the animals were group into four (4) groups: Group 1: Control, Group2:1, micranthus linn (200mg/kg) Only, Group3: cadmium only(50mg/kg) and Group4: cadmium and I. miranthus linn (50 + 200mg/kg) for three weeks after the animal has been acclimatized for one week, the animals were sacrificed and blood sample was collected to carry out biochemical parameters to investigate the effect of methanol extract of loranthus micaranthus linn leaves. The result shows that, for total protein, there was no statistically significant (P>0.05) different between the test groups when compared to control. Then, for serum creatinine, the result shows that the group administered cadmium, there was a significant increase (p<0.05) when compared to the group treated with cadmium + methanol extract ofI. micranthus linn. The group administered with methanol extract ofZ. micranthus linn only shows no significant difference when compared with the control. Finally, ip blood urea nitrogen, the group administered cadmium only, shows that there was a significant increase (p<0.05) in urea when compared to the group treated with cadmium and methanol extract of /. micranthus linn. Cadmium treated group shows significant increase when compare^ with methanol extract ofI. micranthus linn group, but in methanol extract ofZ. micranthus linn, it shows significant decrease when compared with control. The result suggested no adverse biochemical change being associated with the use ofloranthus micranthus linn.
