ABSTRACT V This study determined the effect of methanol root extract of Sphenocentrum jollycinum on serum total protein, albumin, total bilirubin.of diabetic induced wistar albino rats. 20g of the dried, ground roots were extracted with 300mL methanol. The mixture was later filtered and evaporated at 40°C to obtain a syrupy extract. Twenty wistar albino rats of both sexes, weighing 130-180 g, were randomly divided into five groups offour rats, each group being male only or female only to avoid mating. Groups 1 to 4 rats were induced diabetes by intravenously injecting each with 150 mg/kg body weight of alloxan monohydrate. However, Group 1 was treated with 200mg/kg body weight of the plant extract, Group 2 with 400 mg/kg body weight of the plant extract, Group 3 with glibenclamide (Positive control), and Group 4 no treatment was given (Negative control). Group 5 rats were not induced diabetes (Normal control). The rats were fed with pelleted growers feed and water throughout the study except during the experiment. After two weeks, the rats were sacrificed, their blood collected and the parameters; serum total protein, albumin and total bilirubin were analyzed. The results showed that the both low (123.50±16.78) and high (140.50±36.91) doses of the plant extract appeared to have significantly reduced hyperglycaemia when compared with the negative contiol (320.25±3.54) on week 2. On serum total protein analysis, the both doses of the extract appeared to be more effective in reducing serum protein loss due to diabetes when compared with the positive control (5.65±0.06). Though the test groups showed high albumin levels, this may be due to dehydration. The both doses weie also effective in alleviating total hyperbilirubinaemia observed with the negative control (2.65±0.02). In all, the root extract of S. jollyanum will showed anti-diabetic effect.
