Effect Of Methanol Extract Of Dialium Guineense Leaves On Renal Function And Redox Status Of Alloxan-Induced Diabetic Rats.:- Nwokoma, Chihurumnanya

ABSTRACT viii This research was undertaken to examine the effect of methanol extract of Dialium guineense on the renal function and redox status of alloxan-induced diabetic albino rats. A total of 25 albino rats were placed into 5 groups; Group A was the positive control, group B was the negative control, group C was administered the standard drug (glibenclamide) and groups D and E was administered the plant extract using gavage at the doses of 50mg/kg and lOOmg/kg body weights respectively. The extract caused a significant (P<0.05) difference in lowering the creatinine level of the rats when compared with the negative control at both does (50mg/kg and lOOmg/kg) and also a nonsignificant (p>0.05) difference was observed in lowering and increasing the level of superoxide dismutase in the rats when compared with the standard drug at both doses of the extract. The extract also showed at both doses a a significant (p<0.05) increase in the level of glutathione on the rats. The study revealed that the extract at both doses significantly (p<0.05) increase the level of Glutathione peroxidase level of the rats when compared with the negative control, there was no significant (p>0.05) difference in increasing or decreasing the level of vitamins C and E when the extract was administered to the rats at both doses comparing it with the standard drug. The extract also showed at both doses (50mg/kg and lOOmg/kg) a significant (p<0.05) reduction in the blood glucose levels of the rats with the lOOmg/kg of the extract being more effective when compared with the standard drug. Therefore, the plant extract can be used in the management of diabetic mellitus.
