ABSTRACT

The study examined the effect ofGovernment expenditure on economic growth in Nigeria, from the periods of 1980 through 2018. Specifically, the studied examined the effect ofgovernment recurrent expenditure on economic growth in Nigeria and it also examined the effect of government capital expenditureon economic growth in Nigeria. The study adopted ordinary least square regression., the. data were also analysed using unit root test, Cointegration Test, Error Correction Mechanism, Normality Test, Multicollinearity Test, Test For Autocorrelation, Test For Heteroscedasticity and Granger Causality Test. Thefindings ofthe study revealed that government capital expenditure has positive and significant effect on real gross domestic product and government recurrent expenditure has positive and insignificant effect on real gross domestic product.In conclusion, government expenditure is an important instrument for government to control the economy. It was recommended that Nigeria governmentshould invest more in human development by making sure that workers salary in country irrespective ofthe sectors are pay as at when do since, this will enhance the growth ofthe economy
