Effect Of Fertilizer (Organic And Inorganic) On The Nutrient Composition Of Fluted Pumpkin At Different Harvesting Ages

ABSTRACT

This research work was undertaken to evaluate the nutrient composition of Telfaira occidentalis achieved with various types of soil fertilizers. Randomized Complete Block Design (RCBD) was the experimental design used. Telfaira occidentalis was planted after 4 weeks of application of manure. Harvesting was undertaken at 9-18 weeks of planting (at 3 weeks interval). The following parameters were evaluated; moisture content, ash, crude fibre, total solid, chlorophyll, carbohydrate, sodium, potassium, calcium, magnesium, phosphorous, vitamin C, A, fungal count and bacterial count. In all cases, the period of harvesting affected the nutrient composition of Telfaira occidentalis. The type of manure used also affected the carbohydrate content of Telfaira occidentalis. The interaction between many type and age of harvesting was significant for vitamin A and K contents of samples. High ash content value was observed in plants harvested at the 18 week. Except for experiment, highest vitamin C content was observed in Telfaira occidentalis after 12 weeks.
