ABSTRACT

The study examined the effect of ethyl acetate fraction of Vernonia amygdalina on body weight gain and lipid profile of animals fed a high fat diet (HFD). Lipid profile assay was done using standard kits. Results show that there was a significant difference in Plasma cholesterol concentrations (mg/dL) (p>O.05) of the animals fed a HFD + ethyl acetate 217.85 + 4.16, HFD + olive oil 222.64 ± 6.42, HFD + orlistat 205.37 ± 7.41 and animals fed HFD only 207.23 ± 4.74. The animals fed a LFD had significantly lower cholesterol (p>O.05) than all other treatment groups. The triacylglycerol(mg/dL) of the animals showed a significant increase (p>O.05) in the animals fed a 1-IFD only 213.40 ± 33.64 relative to other treatments which are significantly non different (pO.05) from each other). Low density lipoprotein-cholesterol concentration (mg/dL) in animals fed with HFD + ethyl acetate fraction 68.86 ± 4.99, those fed a HFD + orlistat 65.20 ± 31.19 and animals fed a LFD 98.68 + 20.74 are not significantly different (pO,OS) from animals fed a HFD only 198.36 ± 2.21. The animals fed a HFD + olive oil 132.59 ± 38.62 are significantly different (p
