ABSTRACT Anemia is a common blood disorder that affects people of all ages, though people at greater risk are the elderly, young women and infants. Different drugs are used but many depend mainly on plants and herbal products for its treatment. In this study, the ethanol extract of Justicia earned leaves showed no death in the mice up to 5000 mg/kg body weight of the extract. To assess the effect of the ethanol extract of Justicia cornea leaves on selected biochemical parameters, animals used were grouped into five of six rats each. There was a significant (p<0.05) difference in alanine aminotransferase (ALT), alkaline phosphatase (ALP) in the anemic control group, anemic treated groups with 500 mg/kg body weight of Justicia cornea leaves and a significant (p<0.05) difference in the total bilirubin and aspartate aminotransferase (AST) in the anemic group treated with 1000 mg/kg body weight ofJusticia cornea compared with the normal control group. Urea and creatinine recorded a significant (p<0.05) difference in the anemic animals treated with 100 mg/kg body weight of ethanol extract ofJusticia cornea leaves when compared with the normal control group. Evaluation of the effect of extract on relative organ weights demonstrated a significant (0.05) increase in relative spleen weight in the anemic control group treated with ethanol extract of Justicia cornea leaves when compared with the normal control group, therefore, from this present study, it can be concluded that the leaves ofJusticia cornea possess co toxic effect and serves as an effective hematinic.
