ABSTRACT The effects of ethanol extract of Gouania longipetala leaves on the mean proteinbound iodine (PBI), albumin and globulin levels of acetaminophen-overdosed albino rats were evaluated. The rats (n=20) were, after one week of acclimatisation in the airy laboratory, placed in five groups (G1-G5) offour rats each. G1 (normal control) and other rats received feed and water ad libitum within the two-week duration of the study. G2 rats were, in addition given 1.5g of paracetamol per kg body weight (kgbw), while G3, G4 and G5 rats received 1.5g of paracetamol per kgbw and 200mg, 600mg, lOOOmg of G. longipetela extract per kgbw respectively. Sera from the blood obtained by cardiac puncture on the fifteenth day were used to assay for the afore-listed biochemical parameters. Paracetamol overdose caused a significant decrease (p < 0.05) in the mean albumin level ofthe rats (G2) relative to Gl. However, mean albumin level was significantly shored up in a dose-dependent fashion in the rats that received 200mg, 600mg, lOOOmg of extract (G3,G4 and G5) per kgbw. The difference in the mean albumin levels of G3 and G4 was however significant (p> 0.05). That was indicative of an immediate high need of the protein as transporter. The globulins did not vary significantly (p> 0.05) both pre- and post- paracetamol and extract administrations. That suggested that the overdose might not have caused either haemoglobinopathy or an immune alteration. However, the significant elevation ofPBI level (p < 0.05) in G2 and subsequent significant (p <0.05) down -regulation in G3, G4 and G5 in a dose-dependent fashion was strongly indicative ofthe iodine-depleting effect ofthe drug and ameliorative effect ofthe ethanol extract of G. longipetala on the iodine depletion.
