Effect Of Ethanol Extract Of Gouania Longipetala Leaves On Nitrate And Nitrite Levels Of Acetaminophen Overdosed Albino Rats.

ABSTRACT

The effect of G. longpitala on serum nitrate and nitrite levels of acetaminophen-ordosed rats was investigated in this study. Twenty (20) Wister rats were placed into 4 groups of if 'e rats each. These groups were group 1: positive control group; group 2: untreated group; group 3: 1500mg/kg acetarninophen + 200mg/kg of G. longpitala, subgroup 3(a) 1500mg/kg acetariinophen + 400mg/kg of G.longpitala, subgroup 3(b) which received 1500mg/kg acetaminophen I- 600mg/kg of G. longpitala, subgroup 3(c) which received 1500mg/kg acetaminophen + 800r ag/kg of G. longpitala and group 4: which received 1500mg/kg acetaminophen + 1000mg/kg of G longpiiala. The concentration of nitrite and nitrate were detected at high levels in group 3, as coi Tipared with the control group (P<0.05). The increase in the levels of nitrate in group 3 and 4 )0mg/kg G. longpitala group was statistically significant when compared with untreated and c: ntrol group (P<0.05). Therefore, it is important to investigate the recovery and stability of nitrite and nitrate in samples. The elevated serum levels of nitrate and nitrite in the animals studied could be due to oxidative stress caused by acetaminophen overdose.
