ABSTRACT xi The liver which has been implicated in the metabolism ofseveral nutrients and xenobiotics could be damaged due to exposure to chemicals and metals lauded in used motor engine oil. An imbalance between bilirubin and protein production, excretion could suggest a liver malfunction. This study was aimed at evaluating the protective effect ofAnnona Muricata (linn) aqueous leaf extract on total bilirubin and total protein of male Wistar rats treated with used motor engine oil. Thirty-five male Wistar rats were randomly distributed into 7 groups of five rats each. Group A received standard diets, group B received UMEO only, group C and D received lOOmg/kg and 200mg/kg ofAnnona muricata leaf extract respectively for two weeks before been treated with UMEO for the remaining two weeks, group E and F received 1 OOmg/kg and 200mg/kg respectively oiAnnona muricata after been treated with UMEO for the first two weeks while Group G received the standard drug Vitamin C after receiving UMEO. The experiment lasted for a period of 28 days. Body weight changes ofthe animals were evaluated and total protein and bilirubin levels measured. The animals treated with UMEO had a significant (p<0.05) reduction in body weight than the control group but those who received the Annona muricata leaf extract showed a significant increase in body weight when compared to those that didn’t. There were significant (p<0.05) reductions in total protein and increase in total bilirubin levels in animals treated with UMEO but similarly a significant increase in total protein and decrease in bilirubin levels was observed with administration of the leaf extract. This study showed that UMEO is capable of inducing hepatoxicity and Annona Muricata leafextract possess hepato-protective ability as increase in total protein and decrease in bilirubin levels were observed. Hence, Annona moricata leaf extract may serve in liver treatment therapies.
