ABSTRACT viii Citrus sinensis is a unique member ofthe Rutaceae family. Its peels has never been investigated in regards to its total phenolic and flavonoid contents and in-vitro antioxidant and activities. Citrus sinensis peels was extracted with absolute ethanol. The total flavonoid and phenolic contents ofthe extract were evaluated to determine their correlation and concentration when compared with the antioxidant activities of the extract. The ethanolic extract demonstrated a significant amount of phenolics when compared with flavonoids as at (39.33 ± 0.03 mg/ml and 10.19 ± 0.01 mg/ml, respectively) and exhibited good antioxidant activities. 1,1-Dipheny1-2- picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) as at (104.37 ± 0.52) when compared with vitamin C (Standard) as at (70.65 ± 0.02). Vitamin C was found to have increased scavenging activity of Citrus sinensis ethanolic peels extract when compared to DPPH. Reducing power and hydrogen peroxide assay conducted was also high. The results ofthe present study show, that the ethanolic extract could be used as a pharmaceutics or cosmetic formulations.
