ABSTRACT

The present study investigates the anti-inflammatory and diuretic ac-ivity of ethanoiic extracts of the leaf of Newbouldia laevis. The ethanol leaf ex ract was administered intra-peritoneally to the rats at doses of 18.25, 37.5, 75 150 and 300mg/kg body weight respectively for the anti-inflammatory effect whe1 :! aspirin was used as a positive control and normal saline for negative control. The average inflammation decreased as time intervals increased. However, highest i hibition was obtained with the extract of highest concentration (11.67± 1.53) for 300mg. The diuretic effects was evaluated by measuring the urine volume. Th extract produced a significant increase in urine volume at 30 and 150mgkg (6.62± 1.16 and 4.42±0.33) respectively with a significant difference (p<0.050. furosenide was used as positive control and normal saline was used as negative contrc!. These results show that ethanol leaf extract of Newbouldia leavis has pote1 ·tial and significant anti-inflammatory and diuretic properties.
