ABSTRACT viii As the world accelerates towards a digital-first future, education must evolve beyond traditional constraints, leveraging cutting-edge technologies to foster dynamic, immersive, and accessible learning experiences. This research presents the design and development of a next-generation web-based distance learning system enhanced with interactive multimedia features, tailored specifically for Michael Okpara University of Agriculture, Umudike (MOUAU).In an era where artificial intelligence (Al), augmented reality (AR), virtual classrooms, and adaptive learning algorithms redefine education, many institutions still struggle with outdated e-leaming models that lack real-time engagement, scalability, and personalized learning paths. The primary objective of this study is to bridge this gap by creating a smart, user-centric, and immersive virtual learning ecosystem that integrates Al-driven content delivery, real-time interaction, and adaptive assessment mechanisms to optimize knowledge retention and engagement. The methodology involves a full-stack web development approach, utilizing HTML5, CSS, JavaScript, and modern front-end frameworks, combined with a robust back-end powered by MySQL and PHP. Additionally, WebRTC and Al-powered chatbotsis incorporated to facilitate real-time student-teacher interaction, while machine learning models will analyze learner behavior to offer personalized recommendations and an intelligent course navigation system. The anticipated outcome is a scalable, intelligent, and interactive distance learning platform that fosters an engaging, flexible, and inclusive academic experience. This system will not only enhance remote learning at MOUAU but also set a precedent for the future of digital education, where Al-powered automation, virtual collaboration spaces, and blockchain-secured academic records redefine how knowledge is imparted and assessed. The study recommends that institutions integrate emerging technologies such as Al tutors, virtual reality (VR) simulations, and gamified learning modules to further elevate the student experience. As higher education moves towards a fully digitized and decentralized paradigm, this research underscores the importance of adopting next-generation learning management systems (LMS) to future-proof academic institutions and enhance the global accessibility of quality education.
