ABSTRACT

The tannin, cyanide, oxalates, phytate, trypsin inhibitor, crude protein and saponin contents of poultry feeds of four animal feed companies in Nigeria were evaluated. Tannin, oxalate and phytate were determined; pectrophotometically, crude protein and tiypsin inhibitor was determined by titration, saponin was determined by solvent extraction gravimetric method While total cyanide was determined by enzymatic analysis. For the four different feeds (Top, Pfizer, Guinea and Vital) total cyanide levels in frames from 3.00-8.32. 8.71-22.18. 2.50-20.20 and 5.15- 19.00, for broiler starter, broiler finishers, growers and layer feed respectively. Tannin levels obtained in % ranges from 0.07 - 0.19, .02- 0. 17, 0.05-0.18 and 0.03 — 13 for broiler starter, broiler finisher, grower and layers feeds respectively. Trypsin inhibitor levels obtained in Tuig ranges from 40-159, 55 — 516, 20 — 126 and 60 — 84 for broiler starter, broiler finisher. growers and layers fed respectively, fatty concentrations crude protein. oxalates phytate and saponin were also measured in these leds. The effects of these phytotoxms and antinutritional factors are discussed.
