ABSTRACT

The determination of cyanogenic potential of some CMD cassava cultivars as well as partial purification and some properties of their f3- glucosidase were carried out using biochemical and spectrophotometric methods. The cyanogenic potential determined for peels, pulp and leaves of TMS/98/0581 were52.8, 94.40 and 122.0 mgCNkg -1 and 72.3, 174.2 and 273 mgCNkg-1 for TMS/98/0510 respectively. Partial purification of the f3-glucosidase from these cultivars by ammonium sulphate precipitation followed by centrifugation and dialysis yielded 3-glucosidase with activity of4.42units/ml for TMS/98/0581 cultivar and 2.5 units/mSl for TMS/98/0510.The Km and Vmax values determined for these enzymes using line-weaver Burk plot and cyanide yield from linamarin as substantiated were 2.78 and 2.33pm01 for S95, 2.78 and 3.57pm01 for TMS/98/0510.
