ABSTRACT
This work was conducted to determine bacterial species associated with wound sepsis and their sensitivity patterns to antibiotics. The wound swabs were collected from sixty (50) patient in Federal Medical Center (FMC), Umuahia and were processed to isolate bacterial species using standard techniques. Their sensitivity to antibiotics was also determined. The Bacteria isolated from the samples were Staphylococcus aureus, pseudomonas aerugnosa, streptococcus species, Kiebsiella species, and Escherichia coli, they were identified based on their colonial morphologies, gram staining, motility and biochemical tests. The number and the percentage occurrences of the bacteria isolated were Staphylococcus aureus, 16 (32%), Kiebsiella species 10 (20%), Escherichia coil 5 (10%), Streptococcus species 8 (16%), and Pseudomonas aeruginosa 11(22%), from the result Staphylococcus aureus, 16 (3 2%) has the highest percentage occurrence followed by Pseudomonas aeruginosa 11(22%) and Klebsieiia species 10 (20%), while the lowest percentage occurrence was seen in Escherichia coli 5 (10%). The antibiotics used for the susceptibility testing were ciprofloxacin (CPX), gentamycin (CN), Amoxil (AMX), Ofloxacin (ofx), streptomycin (S) Chloramphenicoal (CH), ampiclox (APX), and Augmentin (AUG). Their Zone of inhibitions (in milimetre). Staphylococcus aureus was highly resistances to Ofloxacin, Ampiclox and Augementin Treatment guidelines for use of antibiotics should be formulated based on the hospital formulary and the sensitivity patterns. This should be reviewed occasionally
