ABSTRACT
Comparative analysis of the quantity of gas flared by the joint venture companies in Nigeria from 2003 - 2012 was carried out in this study. The study was motivated by the enormous negative implications of gas flaring on the socio-economic and health status of the people. It aimed at the determination of significance of the joint venture companies and years on gas flaring. Data on quantity of gas flared, in cubic metres, by the individual joint venture companies over the years were collected from Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) through the website: www.nnpcgroup.com and were analyzed using the fixed effect model of two-way Analysis of Variance without interaction. The result showed that there is significant difference in the quantity of gas flared by the joint venture companies and the quantities also differ significantly among the years. The pairwise comparison test revealed that Shell Petroleum Development Company (SPDC), Mobil, Chevron and Nigerian Agip Oil Company (NAOC) were the leading companies in gas flaring without any significant difference among the quantity of gas they flared. They were followed by Total E&P who flared gas more than TEXACO and PAN OCEAN without any significant difference in the quantity of gas flared by the later two companies. Comparison of quantity of gas flared according to years showed no significant difference in the quantity of gas flared from 2003 - 2006 and the quantities flared in these years exceeded the quantities flared for the rest of the years. Quantities of gas flared from 2007-2011 appeared not to be significantly different. The least quantity of gas was flared in 2012.
