ABSTRACT

Bees are the primary pollinators for most ecological regions of the world (Axelrod 1960; Bawa 1990). Their foraging distance strongly influences the sexual reproduction of most flowering plants and can determine the genetic structure of plant populations (Campbell 1985; Waser et al., 1996). Crop pollination is enhanced by bees that depend on natural habitats (Greenleaf and Kremen 2006a, 2006b; Klein et al., 2003a, 2003b; Kremen et al., 2004, 2002; Ricketts 2004). Many wild bees that pollinate crops nest in natural habitats and forage on crops within their daily travel distance (Ricketts 2004). Foraging distance therefore determines the spatial scale at which wild bees can provide pollination services to crops (Kremen 2005).
