ABSTRACT

The aim of this study was to compare the levels of some antioxidants in male and female undergraduates of MOUAU. Blood samples were collected from 90 students and were divided into two groups: male and female. The analysis was carried out to know the levels of the antioxidants, superoxide dismutase (SOI)'), catalase (CAl) and malondialdehyde (MDA) using the method of wallin et al 1983 for malondialdehyde, catalase level was done according to the method of Aebi (1983) and the superoxide dismutase level was determined using the method Xin et al (1991). From the result, it was observed that no significance (P> 0.05) was shown when the catalase level is being compared between male and female undergraduates of MOUA1J. It was still observed that no significance (P> 0.05) was shown when the malondialdehyde level is being compared between males and females of MOUAU. It is observed that there is significance (P < 0.05) shown when the superoxide dismutase level is compared between male and female undergraduates o[ MOUAU. This study shows the great importance of superoxide dismutase and catalase in the elimination of free radicals from the body as well as the importance of malondialdehyde which is a biomarker of lipid peroxidation in the body.
