ABSTRACT Clove is a known medicinal plant and different pharmaceutical properties have been ascribed to it probably due to its bioactive potentials. The aim of this study is to determine that clove extract attenuates doxorubicin-induced cardiotoxicity in rats through suppression of oxidative stress. To achieve this, thirty two rats were divided into four groups. Group one was the normal group, group two was doxorubicin group, group three was co-treated 200mg/kg of clove extract and group four was co-treated 400mg/kg clove. The result showed significant (p<0.05) reduction in lactate dehydrogenase activity and creatinine kinase activity in the clove co-treated groups compared to the doxorubicin group. The Lipid profile also showed significant (p<0.05) reduction in low density lipoprotein, cholesterol, and triglyceride concentration while also showing significant (p<0.05) increase in High density lipoprotein in the co-treated groups compared to the doxorubicin intoxicated group. It could hence, be concluded that clove extract has cardioprotective potentials and can exhibit anti-hyperlipidemic properties.
