ABSTRACT

 Some nutritive and phytochemical components of leaves and sterns of Hyplis suaveolens were studied, proximate analysis of leaves (glloOg} yielded proteins 10.24 ± 0.01, lipids 2.0 ± 0.00, fibre 5.63 ± 0.53, Ash 11.40 ± 0.57 and carbohydrate 55.78 ± 0.64 while the stem had protein 8.75 ± 0.00, fat 2.00 ± 0.00,fibre 17.55 ± 1.63, Ash 9.58 ± 0.31 and carbohydrate38.13 ± 0.53. Phytochernical analysis of leaves gramme {%} yielded alkaloids 2.80 ± 0.283, flavonoids 1.90 ± 0.141, cyanogenic glycosides {rng%} 44.182 ±1.389,tannins 5.500 ± 0.074, saponins 6.100 ± 10.42, while the stem had alkaloid 1.60 ±0.00, fiavonoid 0.300 ± 0.141, cyanogenic glycosides{rng%} 52.037 ± I .388,tannin 0.230 ± 7.07 x aiid saponin 10.50 ± 0.792. Mineral analysis of leaves {rng%} yielded Na 1.46 + 4x10, K 0.99 ± 3xl0, Ca 0.52 + 5.8 x10 3,Mg 0.15 ± 0.00, selenium 1.0 x l0_6 ± 0.00, Fe 2.08 ± 0.02 and Zn 0.63+ 0.00 while the stern had Na 1.5 ± 0.00, K 1.03 ± 0.04, Ca 0.73 +0.003, Mg 0.16 ± 5.77 xI0 ,seleniurn 1.0 x106+ 0.00, Fe 2.13 ±5.8x10 5and Zn 0.68 ±. 0.00. These results show that both leaves and stem of Hyptis soaveolens are rich sources of nutrient, phytochernical and important minerals.
