ABSTRACT

The aim of the present study was to evaluate the changes in zinc, iron and calcium levels associated with oral administration of methanolic extract of Telfairia occidentalis. A total of twenty (20) wistar albino rats were used for the study and grouped into five (5) equal groups. The normal control (group 1) was administered normal saline, group 2 was administered 2% pyrogallol to suppress the immune system, group 3 was administered 200mg/kg body weight of methanol extract of T.occidentalis and group 4 was administered 400mg/kg body weight of methanol extract of T occidentalis and group 5 was administered 2% pyrogallol to suppress the immune system without any treatment. At the end of 21 days treatment, blood was drawn by ocular puncture and serum used for the assays. Results showed a significant (p0.05) decrease was seen in calcium concentration. The analysis also showed a significant (p<0.0S) decrease in zinc concentration. This study showed the relevance of T.occidentialis in maintenance of blood level, treatment and management of anaemia as well as maintenance of strong bones through its supply and supplementation of food nutrients with calcium. >>0.05) decrease in zinc concentration. This study showed the relevance of T. occidentialis in maintenance of strong bones through its supply and supplementation of food nutrients with calcium.
