 ABSTRACT

A study on cattle production in the humid zone of southeastern Nigeria was carried out in Michael Okpara University of Agriculture Umudike. The study was focused on comparing some production

parameters in the area with results obtainable from the northern parts of

Nigeria. The results obtained showed that season had a significant influence

on calving, sex had a significant effect on birth weight of calves (p<O.OS),

the dreaded disease trypanosonliasis was absent, the calving percentage of

the herd of 63.64% is satisfactory and the calving intervals of the different

breeds that make up the herd compared favourably with that of their

northern counterparts.

At the end of this work, recommendations were made as to encourage

production of cattle in other parts of the southeastern Nigeria. This will help

meet the protein needs of the country.
