Abstract This work focuses on how sustainable development could be attained through effective school library services with critical look on the concept of sustainable development, overview of school library services, the impact of school library services in attainment of sustainable development, problems facing school library services and strategies for effective school library services. The paper concludes by stating that in order to attain sustainable development, education at the grassroots level must be given prior attention. Also, education and library are two vital institutions that should not be separated in an all-round development of a child. Education as a result of knowledge imparted develops abilities, attitudes, behaviour and technical know-how and the agency responsible for acquiring, disseminating and imparting this knowledge is the library. Therefore the provision of well equipped school libraries with well trained personnel is crucial and indispensable to attainingsustainable development.
