ABSTRACT ix This present study isolated, investigated the distribution of bacteria from frequently touched surfaces in Madonna Catholic hospital and also the antimicrobial susceptibility of the isolates. A total of 50 samples were collected from various surfaces like door handles, staircase railings, hospital beds, tables and benches. The most frequently touched surfaces samples were collected from target sites by rubbing and rotating sterile swab sticks moistened with normal saline. Inoculations whs carried out using MacConkey agar after incubation, the isolates were identified using Gram staining and biochemical test. Sensitivity test was done with Mueller Hinton agar using Kirby Brauer disc diffusion method. The most occupied departments such as Medicine, Surgery, and Intensive Care Units were included. Staphylococcus aureus, Coagulase negative staphylococci, Escherichia coli and Pseudomonas sp were isolated from the most touched surfaces. Staphylococcus aureus is the most frequently occurring isolates with a percentage occurrence of 12(33.3%) while Pseudomonas sp had the least percentage occurrence of 5(13.9%). The presence of these organisms were observed to be the leading cause of hospital acquire infections. Thus, decontamination of the sites with alcohol based disinfectants would reduce the microbial flora from these sites
