ABSTRACT ix The study was aimed at determining the prevalence and antibiotic Susceptibility patterns of pathogens isolated from urine specimens in Umuahia. Urine samples were collected from male and female participants in Umuahia metropolis. The urine samples were inoculated onto CLED agar. The isolates were identified using a combined morphological appearance on the agar plate and biochemical characterization protocols. The bacteria isolates were subjected to antibiotic susceptibility testing using the agar diffusion method. Of the 51 samples examined, there was a 50.9% prevalence of urinary pathogens recovered. Staphylococcus aureus was the most predominant isolate with 34.6% occurrence followed closely by Escherichia coli with 30.8% occurrence. Klebsiella species and Proteus species each had 15.4% and 7.7% occurrence respectively. Ofloxacin and Levofloxacin were the most potent antibiotics against the isolates with 62.5% and 100% activity against E. coli. Similarly, it was seen that 77% of the S', aureus isolates were susceptible to both Ofloxacin and Levofloxacin. However, Augmentin and Cefotaxime were the least potent drugs as a greater percentage of the isolates were resistant to the antibiotics. This study suggests judicious use of antibiotics to forestall further antibiotics resistance amongst bacterial isolates.
