ABSTRACT
Antimicrobial susceptibility of gram negative bacteria isolated from urine samples was studied. Urine samples 50 collected from patients were examined bacteriologically for the presence of Gram negative bacteria. Gram negative bacteria isolated included Escherichia coli, Proteus species, Kiebsiella species and Pseudomonas aeruginosa. Among the isolates, Escherichia coli (40%) was the most common followed b y Proteus s pecies ( 20%), P seudomonas a eruginosa (12%) and Kiebsiella species (6%).Out of the 17 antimicrobial agents used, the isolates showed resistance mostly to Penicillin, Nalidixic acid, septrin Augumentin, Cephalexin, Peflacine and were susceptible to Tarivid, Gentamicin, Streptomycin. Escherichia coli was highly sensitive to Tarivid, Streptomycin but resistant to Penicillin. Pseudomonas aeruginosa was highly sensitive to Gentamicin, Chloranphenicol but completely resistant to Cephalexin. More sc t1ie -study has provided important information on alternative antimicrobial drug suitable for use in the treatment of urinary tract infections.
