ABSTRACT

The antimicrobial activity of aqueous and ethanolic extracts of Psidium guajava (guava) and Cymbopogon citratus (lemon grass) was evaluated against Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coli using disc diffusion and broth dilution methods to determine the diameter of zone of inhibition and minimum inhibitory concentration of the extracts. The ethanolic extracts of Cymbopogon citratus showed a diameter zone of inhibition of 20mm against Escherichia coli at 100jg/ml while the diameter zone inhibition of the aqueous extracts of Psidium guajava against Staphylococcus aureus was 12mm. The minimum inhibitory concentration of the ethanolic extracts of Cymbopogon citratus against Staphylococcus aureus was 6.5 jig/mi.
