ABSTRACT
The aim of this work is to determine the antimicrobial activities of leaf extract of Piliostigma thonngii and Vernonia amydalina. This study was carried out by drying the leaves at room temperature and was grounded using apestle and motar into smaller particles. 100grams of the powdered sample was then stored in airtight container. This study was carried out to evaluate the antibacterial effect of Pilostigma thonnigii and Vernonia amygdalina on Staphylococcus aureus and E.coli. The plants were identified and ethanolic and aqueous extraction of the dried leaves samples were done using standard procedures. Antibacterial activity of the extracts was tested invitro against Staphylococcus aureus and E.coli using agar diffusion method. The pattern of inhibition varied with plant extract, solvent used for extraction and test organisms. Ethanol extracts showed the highest zone of 37mm of Pilostigma thonnigii against Staphylococcus and highest zone of 35mm by V. amygdalina against E coli. For the water extract Pilostigma thonnigii showed high zone of 27mm than that of V. amygdalina which showed 16mm. it was also observed that Staphylococcus had the lowest minimum inhibitory concentration against Pilostigma thonnigii and V. amygdalina respectively. From this work, it has been noted that the leave of Pilostigma thonnigii and Vernonia amygdalina have antibacterial properties.
