ABSTRACT

The antimicrobial activity of aqueous and ethanolic extract preparations of Cnidoscolus aconitifolius was evaluated against some food borne organisms. Disc diffusion method was used to determine the diameter zone of inhibition and the Minimum inhibitory activity of the extracts was also evaluated. Three organisms namely Staphylococcus aureus, Escherichia coli and Aspergillus niger were used for the study. The antibiotics used as control are Chloramphenicol and Ketoconazole. The diameter zone of inhibition produced by the aqueous and ethanol extract of C. aconitifolius on all the tested organisms ranged from 5-10mm. The antimicrobial activity exhibited by the ethanol and water extracts of C. aconitifolius justifies the therapeutic use of the plant material against some organisms
