ABSTRACT
The antibiofilm activity of aqueous and ethanol extracts of three leaves (Piper guineense, Ocimum gratissimum and Moringa oleifera) from wound infections was investigated. The clinical isolates their ability to form biofilm using the microtitre plate method. The inhibition of biofilm in graded serum concentration which represents the degree of chronic wound infections was investigated using the crystal violet assay. The cell counts in the presence of the extracts showed that Pseudomonas aeruginosa recorded 5.5.x 107cfu/ml and Proteus mirabilis recorded 6.8 while the control count without extracts recorded 1.3 x 108cfu/ml and 1.2 x IO8cfu/ml respective!). formation for Pseudomonas aeruginosa was 87% while Proteus mirabilis recorded 69%. The aqueous extract of Piper guineense was active on Pseudomonas aeruginosa biofilm up to serum concentration of 15% with average percentage effect of 44.7% while the ethanol extract of Ocimum gratissimum was active on the same biofilm up to serum concentration of 15% with average percentage effect of 59.5%. Piper guineense aqueous extract had effect on Proteus mirabilis biofilm from 0% to 20% average percentage effect of 28.6%. extracts from Piper guineense and Ocimum gratissiumum could be harnessed for wound dressing solution in non-chronic wounds. xii the biofilms. From this study the on the bacterial biofilm of Moringa oleifera extracts had the least effect on serum concentrations with average percentage effect of 67.5% while the aqueous were screened for serum concentration of 20% recording
