ABSTRACT

The antimicrobial property of honey was tested against Staphylococcus aureus from palms o, food handlers in Ahia Ohuru market Aba, Abia State. Various concentrations of honey (25%, 50% and 100%) were used to test for antibacterial activity against Staphylococcus aureus isolates. The diameter zones of inhibition for 25% concentration range were between 0mm (no inhibition) to 7.2mm. The range was between 8.0mm to 9.3mm for 50% concentration and 12.0mm to 14.0mm for 100% concentration. The result shows that honey has an inhibitory effect on S. aureus which increases with increase in concentration. Therefore, it can be used as an alternative to chemotherapeutic agents.
